British Dance Edition 2012

British Dance Edition logoBritish Dance Edition is the UK dance industry’s leading showcase event, presenting the best of British dance to promoters and producers from the UK and across the globe, who together control programming budgets worth over £25million. British Dance Edition evolved from Spring Collection, created by The Place and Southbank Centre in 1992, and was first held in 1998, previous events include Liverpool in 2008 (part of the city’s European City of Culture programme) and Birmingham in 2010. The event is an initiative of the National Dance Network and takes place biennially.

In 2012, London’s Olympic year, it will be held in the capital for the first time. British Dance Edition London 2012 will be hosted by a consortium of eight of London’s leading dance promoters – The Place, Sadler’s Wells, Southbank Centre, ROH2, East London Dance, Greenwich Dance, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (Trinity Laban) and Dance Umbrella.

For the first time the showcase will present a fully currated programme of work that has grown out of the consortium’s ongoing development work with artists and in consultation with the National Dance Network and other key producers. In addition to a broad programme of dance there will be opportunities to meet the artists, discuss the work and engage with other promoters. There will be a small Trade Fair taking place alongside the performance programme.

The relationships forged during the process of producing British Dance Edition are forward looking and the London 2012 Consortium is exploring ways of working together to ensure that dance is in a position to thrive in the capital. All eight partners have extensive experience in producing, commissioning and mentoring artists. Collectively they are the bedrock of dance development in London. Over the past 12 months they have created a shared curatorial model for British Dance Edition London 2012 and will further explore how collaborative working can be rolled out in the longer term. By coming together and activating their networks they believe that they can create a supportive and sustainable environment for artists, enabling them to innovate and take risks, in the current rapidly changing economic circumstances.
